Manfred may be willing to push trade deadline back from July 31

NEWARK, N.J. — Major League Baseball’s trade deadline is next Friday, and the ramp-up has seen a total of zero trades made in the past week, since the Dodgers and Marlins engaged in a yawner of a deal that sent Chris Reed to Miami for Grant Dayton. Not a single deal of significance has gone down in July, thanks to a muddled market in which even teams under the .500 mark cannot definitively call themselves sellers. The Tigers, for instance, entered Wednesday with a 46-47 record, but stood only four games out of the second wild-card spot in the American League, and whether they buy or sell remains up in the air. TRADE DEADLINE: Where will Justin Upton end up?Given the inertia on the trade market, it’s worth thinking about whether the non-waiver deadline should be moved back from July 31. Those wondering include commissioner Rob Manfred, who was at the Beyond Sport United conference on Wednesday. “I think that the July 31 deadline is something that we may want to revisit in the context of the revised playoff format,” Manfred said. “Obviously, when you have two additional opportunities to be in the playoffs, you have more teams in the hunt, and they may want to wait a little longer before they make decisions. On the other hand, you’ve got to remember, we want teams that the core of which have been together for the year, playing in the postseason. You just have to balance those two issues, I think.”Teams still can make trades after July 31, but players must clear waive[......]
